The cost of polishing a car mainly depends on the paint condition, the result you want and the equipment you already own. With a professional, you primarily pay for labour, including preparation and inspection. For DIY work, the machine is often the largest one-off purchase, with polishes, pads and towels added on top.
A quick gloss enhancement and intensive defect correction are therefore not comparable services. Using two practical purchasing examples, we show you how to plan your own budget and when using a detailer may make more sense.
How much does professional car polishing cost?
You will only get a meaningful quote once the business knows your vehicle, paint condition and goal. Size, existing damage and the number of polishing stages required significantly affect the work involved. A professional quote therefore describes the agreed scope and the realistically achievable result.
When requesting a quote, ask specifically about:
- Preparation: Are washing, targeted removal of bonded contaminants and masking included?
- Correction goal: Is the aim more gloss or a substantial reduction in wash-induced scratches? Which defects will deliberately be left?
- Stages: Is a one-step process planned, or are separate cutting and finishing stages required?
- Paint protection: Is protection included — and if so, which product?
- Scope: Which panels are being treated, and how will sensitive or repainted areas be handled?
Only then compare the totals. A low starting price for gloss enhancement says little about the cost of multi-stage correction on your car. There is no useful single price across Germany, Austria and Switzerland that accounts for vehicle condition and differing service scopes.
How much does DIY car polishing cost?
The following examples use our German consumer prices in euros, including German VAT, excluding shipping and discounts. Prices as of 28 September 2026. For Austria and Switzerland, and after later price changes, use the price displayed in the relevant shop.
Example 1: you already have a machine and washing equipment
You want to correct light to moderate defects with a one-step process. For an existing machine with a suitable 125 mm backing plate, this is an example shopping list:
- Black-One, 250 ml: €19.49
- Medium One-Step Pads, 125 mm, pack of 3: €27.90
- 400 GSM polishing towels, pack of 4: €10.90
- Ultra Degreaser, 500 ml: €15.90
Total for this purchase: €74.19. This is not a guaranteed complete setup for every car. Depending on the area and pad saturation, you may need more pads or towels. An inspection light, suitable masking tape, any additional paint decontamination and subsequent protection are not included.
Example 2: you also buy a machine
The Pro Polishing Kit with RUPES LHR15 ES currently costs €379.00. It includes the machine with a 125 mm backing plate, three polishes in 250 ml bottles and five different foam pads.
Adding a three-pack of Medium One-Step Pads at €27.90, four polishing towels at €10.90 and 500 ml Ultra Degreaser at €15.90 gives an example purchase total of €433.70. Extra pads of the same grade make more sense than relying on a single pad for a whole polishing stage. Your planned process may also require more pads in other grades.
Missing washing and inspection equipment, along with paint protection, must also be added here. Three polishes in a kit do not mean you have to carry out three polishing stages. See One-step or two-step polishing to choose the right process.
Which costs are easy to overlook?
Your time
Pre-washing, paint preparation, a test spot, polishing, wipe-off and inspection all belong to the process. When timing a test spot, include the entire workflow, not just machine running time. This helps you decide whether the job fits into a day or should be split into stages. A guaranteed number of hours for every vehicle would be misleading.
Too little clean working equipment
A clogged pad does not work like a fresh one. Plan spare pads and separate towels for dirty preparation work, polish wipe-off and final inspection. Our guide to cleaning and changing polishing pads explains how to keep your equipment ready for use.
An overly ambitious correction goal
Every additional polishing stage takes time and removes material. An isolated deep scratch does not need to disappear at any cost. If the paint history is unclear or the clear coat is damaged, a professional assessment is more valuable than the next stronger polish. We explain the limits in Removing scratches from car paint.
Protection after polishing
The polishes mentioned here do not provide durable paint protection. Plan the next step separately. With Soft-Coat, 100 ml, currently €29.90, plus suitable application and wipe-off tools, you can plan a polymer sealant option. For choosing your protection, see Wax or ceramic coating.
When does DIY make sense, and when should you use a professional?
DIY suits you if you want to learn the process, have a suitable workspace and will reuse the equipment. Start with a realistic goal and a small test area. Our polishing guide takes you through the process; Dual-action or rotary helps with choosing a machine.
A detailer may be a better fit if you only need the result once, have little time or lack a suitable workspace. This particularly applies to sensitive, damaged or uncertain repainted surfaces. Have the goal and limitations explained before choosing purely on the lowest price.
Frequently asked questions
Can I polish my car for less than €100?
If you already own the machine and some equipment, an additional materials purchase can cost less than this. Our example totals €74.19. This is not a complete starting budget covering a machine, preparation and protection.
Is hand polishing always cheaper?
You save the machine purchase cost, but need a polish explicitly suitable for hand use and much more time. On larger areas or more pronounced defects, the result is not comparable with machine correction.
Do I need all three polishes?
No. Buy according to the paint condition and your test spot result. A one-step process or finishing-only stage may be enough. Having more grades available does not mean more stages are necessary.
Does a polishing service include a ceramic coating?
Not automatically. Ask the service provider which paint protection is included. With the Safe-Shield polishes used in these calculations, plan subsequent paint protection separately.
